Chapter Ten

“I didn’t know if you wanted to come out and inspect, or if you wanted me to notify the sheriff’s department and let them handle it.” Eddy waited for Kate’s response.

Kate glanced at Ben. “I don’t think the sheriff will be much help. Let’s get out there and see what we’ve got.” Kate headed for the barn. “Oh, wait.... Lily.” Kate performed an about-face and headed back to the house.

Just inside the kitchen door, Lily held Pickles to her cheek as she stood beside Cara Jo.

“Kate, go on, do what you have to do.” Cara Jo waved Kate toward the barn. “Don’t worry about Miss Lily. She and I are going to start training Pickles. Aren’t we, dear?”

Lily nodded. “Mrs. Henderson’s making treats for Pickles.”

Kate bit down on her lip. “Are you sure?”

Cara Jo smiled. “Absolutely.”

“Don’t you have to be at the diner?”

“Not today. I give myself a day off every once in a while. I can do that.” She smiled. “I’m the owner.”

“Thanks.” Kate spun and hurried to the barn where Eddy and Ben stood.

Her first time in the barn, Kate stared around at the tack hanging from hooks on the walls. “Is there a four-wheeler or a horse I can ride?”

Eddy shook his head. “No four-wheelers, but I’ve got a couple horses in the stalls in the barn.”

Ben captured her arms and turned her to face him. “You’re not going. You need to stay and look after Lily.”

“You saw what Marge is capable of.” Kate nodded toward Eddy. “She wields a powerful shotgun, doesn’t she?”

Eddy slapped his hat against his thigh. “Scares me, if that’s whatcha mean.” He slipped a rifle into the holster on his saddle.

Kate felt a little better knowing they’d be heading out with a little more firepower than her Glock, which was tucked neatly into Ben’s waistband, along with the one he wore on a shoulder holster over his blue chambray shirt. She made up her mind. “Lily will be fine with Mrs. H. and Cara Jo will be there as well to entertain her and keep an eye out for trouble.”

Ben crossed his arms. “Sounds like you thought this through.”

“I did.”

“I still don’t think it’s a good idea.”

Her brows rose. “Why not? This is my ranch, and it’s my responsibility to see to the safety of the people and animals on it.” She stepped toward one of the occupied stalls. “I’m going.”

Ben followed, his boots stirring the dust around her. “Have you ever ridden a horse?”

“Plenty,” she lied. Well, it wasn’t a lie if “plenty” meant five times in her entire life.

“Right.” Ben’s one-word response told Kate he didn’t believe her for a minute.

Eddy led a horse from the middle stall. “This is Lucky. She’s a little older and as calm a horse as we have on the Flying K.”

“As compared to what?” Kate asked as she stared up at the horse, thinking the mare was bigger than any of the horses she’d ever ridden.
